Gortemoller Engineering, Inc. served as the Prime Design Firm providing professional engineering services for the design of a 7.5-mile Shared Use Path along SR 30 (US 98/Coastal Highway) from south of Tower Road to SR 61. This project included full use of the right-of-way in order to get trail as far from US 98 as possible. There was 1000 linear feet of sidewalk through the town of Panacea. Sidewalk was chosen to limit the potential for right-of-way impacts. Significant efforts were exercised to reduce impacts to the environment and trees while taking into account long term maintenance costs. The design for this path incorporated the existing terrain and drainage patterns. A project specific sheet pile retaining wall was developed to cross wetlands for this project as well as 1100 linear foot boardwalk in karst sensitive area. The project also included significant utility coordination and right-of-way acquisition.
This project was nominated for a 2024 ACEC Outstanding Project Award.
